But it's interesting to bear in mind the origin of the phrase - in relation to old phonographs (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16593.../image_196.jpg) with no volume control. The only way to make it quieter was indeed to 'stuff a sock in it'.

It's not really a request to be quiet. It's really a rude way to tell someone to be quiet... along the lines of "shut up".

alternatives:

put a cork in it; stuff a cork in it, cork it, stow it, shut your piehole, shut it, shut your face. all express the same meaning, with a varying degree of rudeness and vulgarity, naturally. so, buyer beware
