I never use the progressive form, but think it's fine.

"I look forward to hearing from you" seems to me to be more formal, while "I am looking forward to hearing from you" seems to me to be friendlier and less formal.

Of course, it could just be me.

I'd use the progressive form in speech, probably for the same reasons, often in the form 'really looking forward'.

i think the sentence : I look forwad to hearing from you , makes more sense than the other one because after "TO" comes the verb with -ing.
try to explor the other polls about what comes after look forwad to...

I think 'Iam looking forward to hearing from you' is formal when u write letter, when u speak both are ok. But my english is not well

To me, the difference would be:
"I look forward to hearing from you" - present simple, so the "looking forward" is happening at the time of writing.

"I am looking forward to hearing from you" - present continuous, so the "looking forward" will carry on in the future from the point of writing, therefore making it friendlier.

I would think that the first appears more formal, and would be used in a business context, whilst the second appears to be a more personel form and would be used with a friend or colleague.
