In fact, I found 10 entries for 'avoid to' in COCA. Sounds like none of them is right!:-|
it's easy grammatical rule to remember that 'ing' infinitive should be used after the verb 'avoid' .
I avoided seeing him. I left playing the football. I rejected accepting your letter. I refused sending your e-mail.
Only noun ;-)

I can not avoid myself drinking if I go to the party!
I try to avoid drinking if I must drive after that! (i try to say "i dont drink and drive)
Get respect from everyone; avoid making fun of yourself!
Take myself out of the first. For the second, I'd say:
I try to avoid drinking if I have to drive afterwards.
I thing "avoid" is always followed by gerund.
