Hypocorism and clipping?

Hi everybody,

What's differnce between "hypocorism" and "clipping"?

Since "Yule" put hypocorism in backformation category, I see no change of the forms in the given words there. For example, while "television" being reduced to "telly", its form remains without change. And I simply compare it to the "clipping" term as we subtract the word into another without form modification. For instance, setting "Add" in place of "advertisement".

Can you please help me out?

Look, in "clipping" a word is reduced into a shorter form without a change in the type of the word.
"advertisement" (noun) changes into "advert" (noun)

In "Hypocorism" (which I think is more common in BrE) we have what happens in "clipping", and then forms such as "y" or "ie" are added to the end of the shortened form. "television" changes into "tel" and then into "telly"

However, in "Backformation" the type (part of speech) of the word changes as its form gets reduced. "television" (noun) changes into "televise" (verb)

Hi dear,

I definitely suggest you should check that page again. "Hypocorism" is included in "Clipping" category. (whch deals with shortened forms...)

Ya! But there's something wrong with the edition of your book. Mr Yule must've sorted that out in the 3rd edition of his book. In the third edition of the book, page 55, "Hypocorism" is included in "Clipping" category. So, go for the 3rd edition before it's too late!
