What is an island?

Could anyone explain what an island is (with an example if possible)?
Thanks

Re: What is an island?
It's where a language is spoken in an area and surrounded by another language. I believe that the language comes from another region, like this one:
Palenquero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The group brought the language with them and settled there and are surrounded by speakers of another language.

You may be right, but I thought it has something to do with wh-movement (wh-extraction)

Well, I was originally going to say that it was a bit of land surrounded by sea.
My answer would have been correct. Tdol's answer was correct. Please give us enough context to answer the question you have in your mind.
