Try to precise the purposes or your search. A corpus ? What kind of corpus and to what aims?
Have you an (a priori )opinion on the limits of functional grammar?
I would then strive to give you some hints.
Hi all
I'm trying to pull together a list of the pros and cons of funtional grammar (field/tenor/mode) and also of corpus lingisitics.
Can anybody help with any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Chomat
I'm looking in general terms to compare the two types of linguistic investigation. I don't have a specific corpus in mind. Just trying to understand better the benefits and weaknesses of each and also how they complement each other.
I'd very much appreciate your thoughts.

Can you give me your definition of functional grammar ? We must start on 'equal' terms. We should not be bothered by terminology. I could give you then my opinion.
Do the terms synchrony and diachrony ring a bell ?
Hi Chomat
Thank you for your response. I'm pleased to say that I've managed to get a response from a colleague but really appreciate the time you've taken on this.

Henry Widdowson has argued that corpus linguistics has no pedagogical basis in its pure form; simply looking at results does not provide the data for teaching and a selection still has to be made, so that examples that are more pedagogically useful are chosen.![]()
