"Register" in linguistics is a term for a variety of speech which is used on specialised occasions. For example, a dentist will use a professional register at work (with dentists jargon, being polite to her patients, etc); at home she will use her wife/mother register (which would be more informal and relaxed, and may involve swearing and uttering endearments to her husband). When she goes shopping, she will probably use an intermediate register.

We can say that register refers to:
1. varying degrees of formality and informality (social register: sex, age, social class...).
2. Special language (jargon) which varies from discipline to discipline (discipline oriented register: the language of law/medicine...)
