Here's an interesting historical tidbit. The phrase make your bed comes from the days when people literally made their beds every night. (Typically, such beds were straw mattresses that were rolled up and stored next to a wall when not occupied.) The expression get up, meaning get out of bed was probably even more relevant then.

People used to sleep sitting up at some point in history because they believed they would die if they slept horizontally.
