| In 1974, three Asian American scholars Jeffrey Paul Chan , Frank Chin , and Lawson Fusao Inada co-compiled an anthology of Asian American literature entitled Aiiieeeee!: An Anthology of Asian American Writers . Would you please tell me how to pronounce "Aiiieeeee"? Thanks. Richard |

That is, the 'eeeeee' is phonetic /i:/ not /e:/. |

| I agree with Ray's ideas on the sounds used.... but I'm a bit surprised by two things: 1) the common Chinese interjection in question, as is has become known in North American English, sounds a lot more like "Ai-ya!" than "Aiiieeee" in my humble opinion, and the latter reminds me of the French equivalent of "ouch" or "ow". 2) Well, I guess I'm not all that surprised now, but at first I was a little astnonished they had seemed to have chosen an apparent stereotype as an emblem.... We Vikings would not have chosen as a title for an anthology of Scandinavian American authors such an epithet as "Aaaaarrrrrgh! I'm Berserk!" I don't think. I'll ask my wife, she's Chinese. Oh well, I need another coffee. |
