Default how to pronounce ed

I heard a teacher to say that you have to memorize the pronunciation of ed for regular verbs. Is there a way to know? Really I have to memorize?

Thank you.

Memorization is not absolutely necessary, but you do, of course, have to remember. This information will help you.

If a verb ends with one of these sounds p, f, k, s, sh, ch, then "ed" sounds like t. These consonant sounds are unvoiced.

If a verb ends with a t sound or a d sound, then pronounce "ed" like this "ə d".

If a verb ends with a vowel sound or a voiced consonant, which would be any other consonant sound not listed so far, then "ed" sound like d.

You might want to tell the teacher this, as well.

Would like to add to this... along with the voiced consonant, if the verb ends with vowel sound (which are always voiced) then as well ed would sound like a d (mind you d is a voiced consonant)

Similarly the point to note is that when verb end with unvoiced consonants (except for t), the ed sounds like t (t is also a unvoiced consonant)
