Default pronunciation of Goliath

Dear teachers,

Would you please tell me how I should pronounce Goliath?

My hesitation is about the first syllable because it seems that the second is a triphthong /laiәθ/ (as in "fire" /faiә/)

So for Golaith do you say:

a) /gәlaiәθ/ = monophthong [as in "gazelle"] or

b) /gәulaiәθ/ = diphthong [as in "goal" or "to go"] ?

Thanks,
Hela

Dear teachers,

Regarding the place of articulation what's the difference between short "/ɔ/ for "dog, shot" and long "/ɔ:/" for "bought, wall"? Do they both have a low back position ?

Thank you in advance,
Hela

A)- it's a schwa. Can't you see it?

The difference between short "/ɔ/ for "dog, shot" and long "/ɔ:/" for "bought is how open the mouth is, IMO- it's more open for the short sound.

Have you got phonetic fonts installed on your computer, Hela? I could see your symbols. If you obnly got square boxes, you might need to install a font, but I'm not too sure why you're having the problem:

Dear tdol,

1) For the first link, should I download the zipped file or the self-extracting file?

2) When we pronounce the short /ɔ/, do you think that the position of the tongue is more in a middle postion or a back position?

Many thanks,

Hela

Not much difference to me, maybe slightly towards the middle.

PS- It doesn't make any difference which file you download if you have WinZip installed. If not, the the self-extractor will work without having the program on your computer.
