Peter Falks's accent in Columbo series

I was wondering, what accent does lieutenant Columbo speak with?
I mean, it's oviously American. But does it have any regional features? Although the series set in LA,
P. Falk was born in NY. I also read, that it was typical of working class?

Definitely a New York accent. Perhaps a New Yorker could be more specific. Jewish or Italian New York?
