Sounded perfectly normal to me too. I would say that it's actually quite rare to hear "gives ... you" where the "s" sounds like a "z". It's the transition from the "v" to the "s" that makes us lazy about it, I think. You can make the low-sounding "zsh" (or like the French "j") sound with your front teeth still on your bottom lip where they have been to make the "v" sound. It's more difficult to jump from a full "v" to the "z" sound at the end of "gives", so we run them together and we get "giv-jou" (French "j" sound).
