    Default /pɔː(r) ɔɪl/

    Hi,

    RP

The word "pour" is transcribed as "pɔː."

How is it transcribed when it is followed with a word that begins with a vowel?

    For example, is it /pɔːr ɔɪl/ or /pɔ: ɔɪl/?

    Thanks.

The word pour is frequently transcribed as /pɔː(r)/. The '(r)' means that the /r/ is usually pronounced in RP only when it is followed by a vowel - as in "pour oil".
