I'd imagine it's a /k/ sound for the 'ch'.

This must be a word of greek origin. It seems to me that it may refer to somebody who's afraid of vegetables or plants. Is it so?where did you get it,light?

I have no problem with the meaning. It is the fear of vegetables. I was doing some reserach on phoibas. This one seems very interesting. We have a word in turkish--lahana, which means cabbage. So it is a bit funny as well. So how would you pronounce it?

The Greek sound represented in English by "ch" is, basically, a similar sound to the "ch" in Scots English "loch", or in German "Bach"; or the "kh" in Russian "Mikhail".

This is close to the sound represented in Turkish by an "h". It's very possible that the Greek and Turkish words are related; an etymological dictionary should be of some help here.

so you say it is /h/ not /k/. but there again, in arachnophobia it is /k/. so I thought the same rule applies in lachanophobia.

As for greek and turkish common words: well I have a list of at least 30 words relating to food, vegs and fruit which are almost the same

well, yes!it seems we all -Greek,Turkish,English- agree on the sound of "ch".However, there is no such word in the greek language. Both parts of this compound word are entirely greek ones.By the way,all greek words that are adopted by the english language and have an /f/ sound in them spell it with 'ph'.Ex:photo, dolphin, phobia, phase, philosopher etc.I 'm not aware of any exception. Are you?

hi,
but as I said it is with a /k/ sound in arachnophobia. and tdol said it is probably /k/ for ch in lachanophobia. so in english ch corresponds k.

still, as rewboss mentions in scottish ch sounds like h.

anyway, I love all veggies and I'm not afraid of them
