Question Sound of letter "au" ???

Sound of letter "au" often makes me being unsure as what exacly the sound would be, I wonder if anyone around could possibly point me in the right direction towards any "rules" (if there's any), that makes me IDENTIFY whether the letter "au" would have "o" sound (SHORT vowel as in "hot") OR would it have "O:" sound (LONG vowel as in "fall").

"au" occuring in following word has confused me so far:

>> fault (short vowel)
>> fraud (long vowel)
>> cauliflower (short vowel)
>> audible (long vowel)
>> chauvinism (@U, as in "go", but I guess that diphthong sound "@U" ONLY occurs if the word happens to be French)
>> au revoir (aU sound again, since the word if French)
