The full IPA system may seem a bit daunting. If you want only the phonemes of English, look at IPA Typewriter .
(This is no good for all the dialects you will meet, but if you know and use only these sounds you won't go far wrong. Your English won't be perfect, but it'll be clear and unambiguous.)
