I'm trying to work out the pronunciation and abbreviation key for the dictionary entries on dict.org?
I'm trying to interpret the following -
Library \Li"bra*ry\ (l[imac]"br[asl]*r[y^]), n.; pl. Libraries
(-r[i^]z). [OE. librairie, F. librairie bookseller's shop,
book trade, formerly, a library, fr. libraire bookseller, L.
librarius, from liber book; cf. libraria bookseller's shop,
librarium bookcase, It. libreria. See Libel.]

What do the " and * mean in \Li"bra*ry\ ??
What does l[imac] mean ?
What does "br[asl] mean?
What does r[y^] mean?
What does ^ mean/imply?
What does ' mean/imply (not found in the above example but appears in others)?
What does OE. mean?
What does F. mean?
What does fr. mean?
What does L. mean?
What does cf. mean?
What does It. mean?
I'm sure there are many more. Can anyone explain any of the above?

The weird symbols at the beginning of the entry obviously indicate the pronunciation. I cannot anywhere find an explanation for all of these symbols, but you'd have to look up that explanation to understand them.

The other symbols are easy enough to guess:

OE = Old English
F = French
fr = from
cf = compare with or consult (from Latin "confer")
It = Italian

Incidentally, "cf" is a common abbreviation, like "eg" for "for example" and "ie" for "that is".

What does l[imac] mean ? iMac as an example of how the "i" is pronounced
What does "br[asl] mean? "bra[ssieres]" as an example of how "bra" sounds in the word library
What does r[y^] mean? looks like a symbol to indicate pronunciation of "ry" at the end of library
What does ^ mean/imply? see above
What does ' mean/imply (not found in the above example but appears in others)? would need to see examples
What does OE. mean?
What does F. mean?
What does fr. mean?
What does L. mean? Latin
What does cf. mean?
What does It. mean?
I'm sure there are many more. Can anyone explain any of the above?
