That was fun!

Mr. Ouisch and I spent our honeymoon in Inverness. Some of the most beautiful scenery in the world up there.

Interesting anecdote about our journey there...we'd spent a weekend in Southport, England, at a convention and rented a car with the intent of driving up to Inverness after the convention ended (about noon on a Sunday). According to the map, it wouldn't be more than a five or six hour drive (after all, the whole of the UK is smaller than the state of Michigan). Ha! Who knew. I was navigating, and the main highway we were on went 'way off course to Perth. I chose some secondary roads that seemed to forge a more direct route to Inverness. What I didn't know was that the more numerals in the road designation, the smaller it was. We ended up on some road called AB4217 or some such, and not only were there no markings (no stripes, no reflectors) and no street lights, there were also sheep wandering across the road. Mr. O was not amused.

It was getting dark, so we stopped at the one and only Bed and Breakfast we'd seen in the past two hours. The proprietor said we could have a room for 17 pounds each. (!!) I questioned the price, remembering that we'd rented actual hotel rooms (with bathrooms and TVs and all) near London for about 40 pounds. The man replied, "That's what you'll pay around here, unless you find some wee out-of-the-way place." I was tired and cranky and exploded, "You don't consider this some 'wee out-of-the-way place'?! There are sheep in the street, fer cryin' out loud!!" My husband already had his wallet out, ready to pay, but I suddenly had principles, and we left. We ended up sleeping (or trying to) in the car at a rest stop. He still reminds me of this. Frequently.

You do get a big breakfast for your money. Haggis (which is what the sheep are for - think road kill), Black Pudding, Lorne Sausage etc. No I jest, he was ripping you off 'cos he knows all you Yanks are loaded.

Even when I'm tired and cranky, I try to maintain some semblance of decorum.

I figured he heard our accents and thought "Suckers!" But talk about wee and out of the way....had this place been in the US, there would've been a round-headed half-wit playing "Deuling Banjos" playing on the front porch.

Without giving anything away Ouisch, 17 quid a night per person is about the going rate today. So you were either being taken for s sucker or you only recently married.

Definitely the sucker scenario, then, since this was back in 1994. Um, I was a child bride, though.
