Default Pronunciation of the word "Years"

What is the the correct pronunciation of the word "Years".

Quite often on the news on the radio they pronounce the word "yers" instead of with the "ears" sound. It really is quite annoying!

Hope someone can help?

THe JONES' dictionnary proposes two forms [yie] and [yer] like in bird.

My (Canadian) dictionary says /ji:rZ/ (IPA symbols) where /i:/ is the long "e" sound. EPD lists US pronunciation as /jIrz/ where /I/ is short "i" sound. My pronunciation is closer to the US listing.
