| booths => -ths as in maths months => -ths as in maths months => -nths can be pronounced [ns], no <th> |

| Just as we commonly elide the voiceless 'th' in 'months' to /-ns/, then we also elide voiceless and voiced 'th' in words like 'maths' and 'clothes', which come out similar to 'mass' and 'cloze' (with /-z/), but not exactly the same: the front of the tongue seems to move towards alveolar contact ever so slightly earlier and slightly more front nearer the teeth, influenced by the not-actually-pronounced 'th'. The reason is that we can't seem to be bothered with the effort of pronouncing adjacent fricatives in the same consonant cluster when 'th' is involved, e.g. maths = 'mass' clothes = 'cloze' sixths = 'sicks' fifths = 'fiss' booths = 'booos' months = 'muns' teethes = 'teeez' loathes = 'looaaz' |
