Default Nevada

In the end what is the right way to pronounce "Nevada"?

Is it "nɨˈvæːdə"?

Thank you in advance for your help!

This is very confusing for me!!

This youtube video give us an explanation but I am not sure if I understand it:

YouTube - Nevada pronounce it right - NBC News

In my opinion, according to the video the right way is:

nəvædə

and the wrong way is:

nəva:də

Did I understand well?

Thank you for your help and regards,

Bogota63

So, when in Nevada say /nəvædə/, otherwise it's your choice. Probably most people in the world would say /nəva:də/. I don't think I'll be changing my pronunciation, because all the people I talk to would pronounce it /nəva:də/.

This reminds me of the saying: 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do'.

It's pretty much the same with Colorado, isn't it?

Most people here in Germany, for example, will always pronounce it Color-aah-do, and I've even heard English-speaking persons doing so. The correct pronunciation of this state, however, (I hope I don't blunder now) is Colo'rædo.

As it is situated in Nevada, and if you don't mind, I'd like to ask about the city of Las Vegas, too. Most (if not all?) pronunciation guides give it as 'Lahs Vayges' (Vay like 'way'). But, when I hear Americans pronouncing the name, it sounds to me much more like 'Lahs Væges'. Which one is right, or more widespread in your opinion?
