| Some literature from "Liguistic Society ..." ---Sorry I can not recall exact name of the journal. "Better listeners tend to speak better." This was his theory. I guess that's why girls are better in speaking, including their pronounciation^^;. I think we may have to listen more carefully to speak better. |

| Getting rid of a foreign accent is not easy. It takes years of being immersed in a place where the language is constantly spoken. English is spoken on every continent and in very diverse accents. English in the United Kingdom itself, is spoken in a variety of accents depending on where you are, the North or South; and your social and educational background also play a factor. English in North America also varies, Americans from the Southern states speak English differently from those up North, while Canadians speak with a slightly different accent to Americans in general. So trying to get rid of your foreign accent to speak like a native might be a difficult task because the natives themselves don't have one specific accent. One shouldn't worry a lot about his or her foreign accent. As long as your English is grammatically correct and you get the pronunciation right, native speakers will understand you. There is a great blog that talks about pronunciation in the English Language. Also remember....girls love guys with accents, so be proud of where you come from. Concentrate on bettering your English and not on trying to speak with the "right" accent. |
