I have noticed, while studying English pronunciation, that the sound /t/ in English have sometimes different pronunciations. For example, the /t/ sounds on the words "time" (/taɪm/) and "stay" (/stɛɪ/) are a little bit different. On the first one, the sound seems like a /s/ sound is pronounced at the same time. On the other hand, the /t/ sound on stay seems to be clean (with no /s/ sound).
Well, what I really want to now is when I use one sound or the other, since my dictionary don't show any distinction between them. Does somebody know where I can find phonetic transcriptions in which there is this distinction?
