I'm about to move and live in North America soon and I have a little problem with spelling and reading my surname. Providing that i have russian background, i was taught to write my surname like: Yuldashev. But it seems to me that the correct one should be written like: Uldashev or even Uldasheff? Originally, it should sound like: [ju:l'dashef] So, could you please advise me whether to use U or Yu. Thank you beforehand. Kind regards, Al

If I were you, I would write my name as I had been taught. Maybe there is a different spelling, but no-one will care if you tell them it's spellt your way. (Same goes for pronounciation. Why should you "re-name" yourself?)

It seems that "Yuldashev" is more popular in Russian

If you made a sound file of you saying it, we could say what we hear. I looked at a site listing the top 100,000 US last names hoping to see what other Russians had used. None of your variations appeared. Google: Yuldashev: 39,500 hits Uldashev: 37,800 hits Uldasheff: 1 hit It looks to me like both of the top 2 variations are in use, google keeps suggesting the former.

Hi, A lot of North Americans have difficulty with names from other countries-- I think that which ever way you choose to spell it, you will probably find that you have to spell it out for people. I think that many people hearing the name would assume it starts with a Y. I hope this helps! Mary

U r absolutely right! Thanks for reply! I've just thought of probable local features in North America grammar if any. And, surely, i don't wanna make any changes to my surname as it's mine. :)
