Default pronunciation of "touch"

Hi,
I'd like to know how to correctly pronounce these vowels, please.
Is "ou" pronounced like "ea" in "search"?
Or it is more distinctive and open like the "a" in "article"?
Thanks a lot.

hi,
do you mean the pronunciation of the vowels of "touch" is the same of the vowels of "up"/"cut"/"love"/"but"?
thanks.

What would be the point of the transcription otherwise? (Of course, 'sounds like' answers don't work if the learner pronounces the examples wrongly, which is why I don't like to use them. And the error may be compounded if other readers mispronounce the examples. With four examples, though, there's a better chance of your getting the message!)

But susiedqq's response (which I don't really understand) suggests that this transcription works only for Br English.

Hello Bobk,
My doubt is the following: a long time ago I was taught that "touch" should be pronounced with an "open" and short "a", more or less like the "a" in "about". Since the word "touch" became more worldwide known, because of things like the Apple's I-Touch, I've been noticing a larger number of non native-speakers incorrectly pronouncing it. Then, I just would like to confirm what is the right way. The problem is that trying to establish the sound of a vowel based on other words is simply tricky. As you said, if I learned to speak the "reference" word wrongly, it's no use to use it as a reference. The reference word "about", particularly, seems to have very little chance of being pronounced differently around the world, I think.
What's your opinion, please?
Thanks.

It's most definitely touch [tʌtʃ], so I was very surprised to see other alternatives here!
