Default Long vowels

I want to know if the vowel in the word CAR a long one or a short one??

I know that the transcription of the word car is /k a: r/ so is it short a or long a

Depending on accent, it is short to medium long.

HOW?? it should be long or short I've never heard about medium long!!
How come it depends on accent its transcription is /k a: r/ .

let's make it easier is the vowel transcribed in the dictionary as /a:/ long or short??

Nor have I, and the /r/ is only sounded before a vowel sound (in RP).

Long. That's what the colon's for. (I know not everyone - esp. for versions other than Br Eng - uses this transcription, but the dictionary in this does. Yes, do keep it simple: ":" => long

The phonetic transcription shows it all.

car /kɑːʳ/ US /kɑːr/ So I guess, it's long but not too long...
