I _________ up a small hut in the backyard.

We __________ up the flags on a national holiday.

We ___________ up at a small hotel just on the edge of the town.

Is 'hang' the answer for the blanks?

Thank you so much in advance.

No. Have you ever tried to hang up a small hut?!

For your information, in my opinion, sentence 3 is a rather uncommon use of this phrasal verb. It's correct but I haven't heard it used this way for many years.

Perfect!

You youngsters! I still use it, on the rare occasions I can afford a hotel.

Then dose 'We put up at a small hotel' mean 'We can afford a small hotel'?

:?:

No. It means to stay.;-)

No, it means we "stayed at" a small hotel. It's the same as "Our friends put us up at their house for two weeks". "To put up" means to provide or to take advantage of "bed and board".

The use like "our friends put us up for the weekend" is common. I've never heard it used like "we put up at a hotel."

See #3 and #7;-)

I'm sure that SoothingDave realises that this is a difference between BrE and AmE. I don't think he needs to have this pointed out to him.

I'm sorry SoothingDave, I just meant to help, but apparently Sr. bhaisahab got offended somehow. I'd better keep a distance.

No problem, you were winking at me.
