Many colleagues, acquaintances, and students do not use the subjunctive mood properly. Ninth grade HS texts often do not address a common misuse that I hear often. Consider the following: "If I would have stopped, I would have avoided a wreck." They likely meant and should have said, "If I had stopped, I would have avoided a wreck." Taken literally, the first example means that the person would not stop due to unwillingness to stop, no matter the consequences. That thought often is not the intent.
