Today, I had some problems explaining the word "the public" to my elementary students.
I couldn't use any proper context or story which would have had an Aha effect for the students in that level.
I must say that I am new in the field and any tip will be appreciated.

Downing Street (where the British Prime Minister's residence is situated) is now closed to the public. Only people with a special pass can walk along this famous street to No. 10.

The public = ordinary people.
