Needs Analysis ideas

Just wondering if anyone had any interesting activity ideas for completing a 'needs analysis' for a new class?
Don't just want to give them a questionaire... I'd like something a little more interesting. So far, all i can think of is question and answer type questions in pair work.

What sort of level and background are they?

It will depend on their age and level, but depending on this you could give them questionnaires either to fill in themselves or - if it were possible - for them to ask and answer in pairs.
