Default benefits of using in L2 teaching ?

hello every one,

currently im working on an essy for my elt programme ... as we all know that the CLT minimized the use of the L1 in the classrooms ... and asserted the use of the target language and considered it as the only mean of communicating inside the classroom ... my question here .. what are the benefits of using the L1 and to what extent should it be used ??

"real life experiences on the benefits of using L1 would be appreciated.."

thanks..

In a monolingual class, L1 can help students make a transition, especially if they come from a very different language family, or have different cultural or educational backgrounds.

i totally agree with you but would using the L1 hinders or restricts the development of the learning process and to what extent can we take the use of L1 as an advantage and not as an obstecal..
