Grammar books--should, say, a Japanese person who is a serious...

...student of English have an advanced (English) grammar book, which would probably be, for the most part, written in Japanese?

I'm thinking I should recommend this to a few of my students.

Any thoughts and recommendations from the wise readers of this message board would be much appreciated.

I once saw an ESL book written mostly in Spanish and I didn't like it at all. IMHO, the more exposed to the language students are, the better and faster they will learn. Therefore, it's better if explanations are in the target language.

I would have thought that the more advanced the student, the more likely they are to understand, and benefit from, an English grammar book written in English.

Yeah, if you're advanced enough to need an advanced grammar book, you should be advanced enough to be able to read it in English. Otherwise it will be yet another student who can identify every complex structure put in front of them, but can't string a sentence together when you ask them a question.
