I´m talking about young learners (up to 7 or so).

Two words: early exposure. :up: ABC cards, puzzles, and pictures have both pictures and letters. ;-) Symbols are a good thing, but the fact that they're there doesn't mean you have to teach the students how to read. Exposure is in itself enough.
