Differences between TESL & ESL?
So I'm currently a high school student in the US & I plan on going to uni. and major in Elementary Edu. and then TESOL. After college i wanted to move to the Dominican Republic and teach english to elementary students since english is a requirement in the schools there.
BUT the school I want to go to, University of Miami, doesn't have TESL just Elementary Education/ESE Specialization with ESOL Endorsement. Is that the same thing? If not, what does this course mean exactly?
Thank you =]
Re: Differences between TESL & ESL?
What's the Difference between and TESOL, TEFL, TESL, and ESL?
ESL Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages is quite possibly the most talked about acronym that involves every aspect of teaching English to people who are non-native speakers. The TESOL approach was developed from an absence of a governing focus for teaching English to speakers of other languages. In the past, many organizations acquired their unique special styles for teaching English, but while only focusing on certain aspects of TESOL. Eventually these establishments joined together to produce one standardized way for teaching English to speakers of other languages which has become referred to as TESOL. In recent times TESOL has grown and grew to become its own comprehensive term for various other forms of teaching styles.
ESL or English as a Second Language is often a term widely sought out by potential teachers trying to find a job in the field, however , many would be surprised to learn that this is a student focused acronym. Partially, this phrase is referring to those who are hoping to learn English as a second language for a certain goal in mind. Such as, a foreign English speaker residing in The far east who wants to know English so as to learn or work in an English speaking country.
TEFL or Teaching English as a Foreign Language is really a teacher concentrated phrase to describe teaching in a country where the standard language isn't English. The 1940’s led to the creation of an interest in TEFL. The arrival of Linguistics along with the construction of what is now known as the American Defense Language Institute is basically recognized for setting up teachers to instruct English in foreign nations around the world. The earliest teachers to study language relating to linguistics existed in 1940 at the University of Michigan and provided a foundation for understanding how etymological structures operate. The Army Language School a branch of the American military, what later came to be known as the American Defense Language Institute, dabbled in the analysis of numerous languages throughout the introduction of the second world war. These two establishments paved the way in the progression of teaching English as a foreign language.
TESL or Teaching English as a Second Language can be involved with teaching English to foreign English speakers which are living in an English speaking country. A good example of this would be a Korean immigrant learning English in England.

Re: Differences between TESL & ESL?
By and large, ESL and ESOL are the same- in the UK and Australia ESOL is the common term and in the USA ESL. Where there's a difference is between ESL/ESOL and EFL- EFL is where people are learning the language as a foreign language, so someone learning English in their country would be studying EFL, but if they moved to the US, they would be learning English as a second language (ESL) as they're living in an English-speaking country. That said, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the differences. Put T before any of them and you're talking about the teaching.
