Different courses and places will have different ideas, but by and large I think there would be agreement that the teacher's subject knowledge should be at the necessary level, they should be able to work within the constraints of the system, or able to adapt, and have enough knowledge of the ideas and techniques to get the material to be covered across. Also, the successful trainee would have the confidence to carry out the duties well.
