teaching reading

I am a new english teacher and I want to know more about the competency based approach concerning teaching reading for advanced students of an EFL classroom.:?: please more references.

As this approach requires students to be able to do specific tasks that demonstrate what they have learned, wouldn't you need to break reading up into smaller skill sets so that you could do this? You could take something like reading for gist, train them in doing this and then create tasks that would demonstrate their ability to do this. ;-)
