a- Life b- The life c- A life d- The living
I think they are all grammatically correct possibilities.
Option a is a bald statement of fact and is probably the most generally useful. "Life in the desert is hard for all who live there."
Option b might be chosen when you are talking about someone who has to live in the desert for a time but who comes from a different, easier life. "The life in the desert is hard but they'll get through it with luck."
Option c might be said by someone looking at several possible environments. "A life in the desert is hard but at least you breathe unpolluted air."
Option d could be chosen when talking generally about the people who have always lived in the desert. "The living in the desert is hard and you won't find many obese people there."
