On-to-one

Any advice on teaching one-to-one to a lady who has spoken English for several years but does not really understand (nor need/want) grammatical terms, would be very welcome. Also help with assessing her level and how to teach diction without making her feel she is inadequate. She is from Thailand and finds pronunciation difficult.

Does she need English for work?

Yes, I will explain.

Her daughter and son-in-law run a good quality Thai restaurant where she greets customers, shows them to their table and later acts as cashier. She does not need general conversation for this and I think her vocabulary here is well practised. Confusion often comes in the order of words, and her diction is very poor making it difficult for people to understand without a great deal of patient listening. I have both time and patience to listen but in day-to-day life people are busy. A programme which would improve this situation would be brilliant. She is 62 and has been learning English for around five years. Thank you, Vera

It's not uncommon for Thai learners to have poor diction, and this can make it very difficult to understand some speakers. I would start by getting her to bring a menu along and, for diction, would record her and yourself and compare the two and then work on the problem sounds. You could also use this as a basis for her word order issues.
