Thanks for the link, Lily is great, but Dad sounds a bit ...erm...cruel...Hope he doesn't get sued for child abuse :-8

I got a bit bored halfway through and didn't see all of it, but I don't think Dad was being cruel -- Lily seemed to be enjoying herself.

Young children have a natural curiosity about the world, and many love to learn things. As long as you don't force children to learn stuff against their will (schoolteachers will do that for you a few years later), I think this should be encouraged. Make it into a game, and give them the sense that the world is a fascinating place with lots of interesting things just waiting to be discovered.

In fact, very intelligent children actually need this kind of stimulus. I met one child who taught himself to write out of sheer boredom: he was extremely intelligent, but nobody was giving him anything to learn.
