On average though, I think it's about £10 - £15 per hour for basic teachers nowadays, going up when you've got the DELTA or a few years experience behind you. Not a whole lot for professional work. And the breaks, meetings and preparation time are rarely if ever paid for. No holiday pay, in most schools, no sick leave and certainly no maternity pay.

Are you just starting out?
Hi. I'm thinking of taking up the Celta course in the future, however, I'm not sure yet whether it is a good idea.
If there are many teachers around the rates may not be satisfactory, and as you wrote, no holiday pay, no sick leave etc.
Will see. Thanks.

Mostly miserable- this site suggests that there are plenty paying under £10 an hour. FE colleges generally pay better

Hi Tdol!

Thanks for answering.
Probably they pay better somewhere outside of England?
What are FE colleges? Is it possible for Celta certified teachers to work there?

thanks

I can only speak for Japan, which is sort of on the fence at this point. Last year, the largest English conversation school with roughly 50% of the nation's population of ESL students folded under mismanagement. More than 5000 teachers were left jobless, and the students are unlikely to get refunds. The whole industry here has taken a wait and see approach.

But it's still relatively easy to get a visa to teach in Japan. You won't make much money, apart from a wage to live and travel on. If you have a lot of expenses and bills back home, you probably won't pay them off as a teacher.

With concerns to wages, I'm sure you realize much of this. No one really becomes a teacher for the money!

Hi

You're probably right, but apart from getting satisfaction from your work it's also good to have some money.

If you want to live in a foreign country and get a work visa without too much hassle, English teaching is great. If you want a very profitable job, I suggest you stick with Engineering -the pay scale is much better and you are already doing it. You might be able to find a position in a foreign country that is much better paid, as well. If you insist that you want to teach English, it is a good idea to get a TESOL certificate before you leave home.
