| Offer them a paper with expressions that might help them to speak. Such as, in my opinion I agree / disagree with etc. Encourage them to organise a good notebook. They can build families of words related in meaning. You give them a word, e.g. 'feelings' and they have to look for words that can be grouped under this heading. This is a good opportunity to introduce the using of diagrams (e.g. bubble network) feelings bad: sad, angry, desperate, sorrowful ... good: happy, glad, cheerful, content, joyful, grateful ... This might do the trick. They will learn more words and thus become more confident with speaking English. Encourage them to use these new words. | I am taking classes to teach right now and my instuctors tell us that a good method with this is to tell them that while it is good to retain and practice a language that they already know their lives will be better in the future if they will learn English with fluency and that requires that they only use English while in the classroom. |

I have been teaching foreigners for ages, and I have experienced that the only way to stop them speaking their native languages is to fine them. Tell them that at the end of your classes the money collected will be used for going out together. it has always worked! alcester |
