I have a class of teenagers who continually speak in their own language. Has anyone got any brilliant ideas how to stop this happening?

From now on we speak only English. Who says something in another language then English will be given the double homework.Person A breaks the rule, then he/she is given the double homework. And now every one (person B/C/D etc. is on the alert because if he/she breaks the rule again , then the double homework goes over from person A to the one who broke it.

No one wants the double homework so they will try to avoid speaking their native language during the lesson.

Default Re: Help

Offer them a paper with expressions that might help them to speak.
Such as,

in my opinion
I agree / disagree with
etc.

Encourage them to organise a good notebook. They can build families of words related in meaning.
You give them a word, e.g. 'feelings' and they have to look for words that can be grouped under this heading.
This is a good opportunity to introduce the using of diagrams (e.g. bubble network)

feelings

bad: sad, angry, desperate, sorrowful ...

good: happy, glad, cheerful, content, joyful, grateful ...

This might do the trick. They will learn more words and thus become more confident with speaking English.

Encourage them to use these new words.

Regards,
Snowcake

I am taking classes to teach right now and my instuctors tell us that a good method with this is to tell them that while it is good to retain and practice a language that they already know their lives will be better in the future if they will learn English with fluency and that requires that they only use English while in the classroom.

Well, I have read the various help answers. All are good!
I have been teaching foreigners for ages, and I have experienced that the only way to stop them speaking their native languages is to fine them. Tell them that at the end of your classes the money collected will be used for going out together.
it has always worked!

Everyone knows the value of the US Dollar is going down - the only thing that keeps its value is metals - In the early 1900's and ounce of Gold bought a real nice suit - Gold then was around $20 an ounce. Today that same Ounce of Gold Will buy a real nice suit but that $20 would maybe get you a nice tie.
To fight off inflation everyone should be purchasing Gold and Silver in some form - Gold Coins - Silver Coins or bullion / bars
The best way to start is to start out with a simple program called Silver Snowball - You can visit my site, join and start your collection today. snowball silver | silver coins | silver rounds | buy silver | silver bars |

If you want to spam, be kind enough to improve your English first.
