Default English testing

Hello!

I'm about to start teaching English as foreign language. Would you please tell me what is the best way to test the childrens level and language knowledgement?

There are many standard tests - but for a quick assessment talk to them individually about familiar subjects (family, classroom objects, colors, native animals) and grade them 1 to 5 on how they sound to you.
1 = unable to understand anything; 2 = got some idea but could not find words to answer; 3 = could make rudimentary answers to easy questions; 4 = answered most questions with some errors in grammar or pronounciation; 5 = could carry on a 5 minute conversation in English.
