Hi,
Here are some steps you will find useful in working on a listening task with learners of any level:
Before the listening task, you need to prepare the students to listen by activating what they know about the topic, or introducing important information about it. You can use pictures, or introduce key vocabulary or have them brainstorm words or questions.
For the actual listening activity, it helps to have a clear task for students to perform. You need to be clear about what you want students listening for. Are they listening for general or specific information? Make sure students understand the task involved by giving a clear explanation and demonstration. This helps students know what to listen for.
It helps to let students listen to the listening text once before they have to work on the task.
Let students listen as many times as needed to complete the task. Give them an opportunity after each listening to check answers with each other.
At the end you can go over the answers with the whole class, and focus on any difficulties.
After the task completion you can focus on a specific language point, vocabulary or theme that was in the listening. Try to integrate skills by introducing a conversation task and a reading/writing follow-up.
I hope this helps.
Take care,
Mary
