Delete "very" from the sentence in question. You are either a beginner or you are not.

A friend insists there is nothing wrong with the above sentence.
Any comments, anyone?

Re: Mr I'd say there were two things that need changing- 'very' should go and it should be 'beginner'. We do say absolute/complete beginner, though. 'Very' is an adverb, so shouldn't modify the noun here.
