It depends on what you are looking for. This is too complex a subject to have an easy answer. Try this

1. Find a passage in a novel
2. Read the passage at least three times
3. If you find words or terms that you do not understand - research these words and terms until you do understand them
4. Read the passage again
5. Decide if the author intended for the passage to have more than one meaning
6. Examine how the author used certain words
7. Post the passage here and write what you think the author meant
