I want to shorten this phrase: for the case where X is small

Should I say: for small X or for X small? or what else would you suggest?

I think for small X is correct but maybe for X small is ok also.

Thanks.

I don't know if you're referring to the letter 'x' or are just omitting something for confidentiality.

'For small X' seems correct to me. Perhaps 'where X is small' also. It might depend on what 'X' is though.

X is just a quantity, for example, velocity, whose value can be small or big.

How about - When X is small or where X is small?

Since this phrase will be put in a more complex sentence, so I prefer a phrase to a complete sentence.

Honestly, I think we need to see the full sentence.

For example, you wouldn't talk about small velocities, but low velocities (nor would you talk about large velocities, but high velocities).

It really does matter what X is.
