i don't fully understand the Poem..

i know it's stupid but poerty is my weak point in English.

Friday Australian poem #11: “Because” by James McAuley Floating Life 4/06 ~ 11/07

i didn;t want to copy the whole thing.
This is not a terribly difficult poem.
You need to try to analyse it yourself first. That is why you've been assigned the task - to help you learn how to understand things that are a little bit beyond your current capacity.
Is there any of it you do understand? Why not tell us what you think it's all about?

Mmmm .. Nice poem

But I didn`t understand this part:

The poor man’s curt embarrassment
At such a delicate proffer of affection
Cut like a saw. But home the lesson went:
My tenderness thenceforth escaped detection

And this one:

Judgment is simply trying to reject
A part of what we are because it hurts.
The living cannot call the dead collect:
They won’t accept the charge, and it reverts

Any one may explain please?
And what is exactly the main topic in this poem??

The poor man’s curt embarrassment
At such a delicate proffer of affection
Cut like a saw. But home the lesson went:
My tenderness thenceforth escaped detection

I felt wounded by my father's embarassment when I was trying to be affectionate towards him. But I learnt my lesson; I did not try to be demonstrative towards him after that.

And this one:

Judgment is simply trying to reject
A part of what we are because it hurts.
We feel hurt because of how our parents treated us. But when we blame them for our feelings, we are not taking responsibility for our own painful emotions. (Perhaps we are converting pain to anger, which is easier to live with.)
The living cannot call the dead collect:
They won’t accept the charge, and it reverts
The living can't make phone calls to the dead. [Why would he want to do this? What would he say to them? Why, now that he believes he is about to be judged by God, is he thinking about his judgement of his own parents? ]

Any one may explain please?
And what is exactly the main topic in this poem??
What do you think it is?

Thanks a lot .. U are amazing! :-D

I think it is about the poet`s feelings towards his parents, and vice versa. I think they treated him so bad and he is wondering why.. Am I right :?:

Yes, he felt that they treated him badly. And he judged them harshly for that. But now that he is dying, and is going to be judged on his life by God (at least that is his belief), he is questioning his own previous judgements of his parents.
Thinking objectively, he knows that his parents did the best they could. Perhaps he could forgive them (but you can't communicate with the dead). He is hoping that God doesn't judge him as harshly as he judged his parents.
Does this make sense?
