[Idiom] Reaching out

Dear Teacher,<
Please tell me what proposition to use after the expression "reaching out"
Is it acceptable to say:
I reached out for the bottle of milk on the table ?
I reached out for my hat on the shelf ?
Are there any occasions where we would need to use another prepostion when using the above expression?

With the second, you might reach up, depending on the height of the shelf.

:up: ...and in the idimatic usage that means 'makes an effort to make contact with' the preposition to use is 'to': 'This candidate is trying to reach out to all the lone parents'.

You don't need a preposition there. "I reached for the milk" is OK.
