Hi,
I'm writing a composition in which I talk about the different sale teams a company has through the country, and how these teams perform.
There is this sentence which I believe is wrong (it sounds wrong)
but I woul like to know why, which grammar rule is not complying with, so to speak:

"To sum up, sales teams in most states like NY, California and Colorado performed better than expected during 2009, but we have to study thoroughly the performance of North Carolina."

I know there that can be rephrased and look better, but my doubt is about the use of "of". As you can see, I'm still not sure wether I can use the possessive 's, or the preposition "of", and how to use the latter.

thanks a lot for your insight.

The sentence you aak about is gramatically correct, but awkward.

I would rephrase the last clause

"but we have to study thoroughly the performance of North Carolina."

as either:

"but we have to study the performance of North Carolina thoroughly."

or

"but we have to study North Carolina's performance thoroughly."

which of the two you use is a matter of choice, but I would consider the first to be slightly more formal

Also note that you should use "such as" rather than "like" in the first clause.
